Vintage Story server basics

What are the Vintage Story server requirements?

The official server documentation lists the requirements for the version you run, so read it first. For a small world among friends you need a PC or rented machine that you own or administer, the server package, a data folder, and port 42420 (TCP) open to players if they join from the internet. Cascadia Merge can read the documentation page for you and write a checklist.

Where does the server keep its settings and saves?

The server keeps everything in its data folder. On a Windows PC the default is VintagestoryData under your user's AppData\Roaming folder, unless you start the server with another data path. Inside it you find serverconfig.json, the Saves folder with the .vcdbs world files, the Backups folder, the Mods folder and the logs. Point the chat's working folder at this data folder, and the agent can reach all of them.

Which port do players use to join?

The default game port is 42420 (TCP). It is set by the Port key in serverconfig.json, so you can change it there while the server is stopped. If players join from the internet, forward only the port you use on your router. Players on your own network do not need the forwarding. Set a password or a whitelist so that strangers cannot join.

How do mods get onto the server?

The Mods folder inside the data folder takes mods as .zip files or as folders, and each one describes itself in a modinfo.json. Content mods are JSON asset files for blocks, items, recipes and translations, and code mods are written in C#. The server and its players need the same mods and the same versions, so take mods from the official mod database only.

What happens if a mod breaks after a game update?

The server may stop on start or refuse players, because mods often break after a game update. If your world crashes on the server after an update, read the log first. The agent can search it with grep for the line where a mod failed to load. To find which mod hurts performance most, remove them one at a time and test again.

Using Cascadia Merge

What can Cascadia Merge do for a Vintage Story server?

Cascadia Merge is an autonomous AI agent for Windows 10 and 11 that runs tools on your files instead of only suggesting steps. It can edit serverconfig.json, copy the Saves folder, search logs with grep, run your own scripts with Shell and read the documentation. Every action appears in the chat as a card with its real result.

Does the code always work?

No. The agent runs commands and shows the real exit code, but a model can write a wrong value or misread a log, and a diff that looks right can still stop a world from loading. Read every diff, test each change on a copy of your saves, and start the server only when you have a way back.

Is cascadiacoders.com the official Cascadia Merge website?

Yes, cascadiacoders.com is the official Cascadia Merge website. The download button gives the original build of the setup program, and you can compare its SHA-256 checksum with the published manifest before you run it. If something looks wrong, use the Send feedback button inside the app, which is the support channel for questions and bug reports.

What do Auto-run, Ask first and Plan only mean?

They are the three approval modes. Auto-run lets actions run at once. Ask first pauses before every action that changes something, such as editing a file, and shows the diff for you to accept or reject. Plan only writes a list of steps and runs nothing, no commands and no file changes, and you switch the mode to carry the plan out.

How do I back up and update the server safely?

A Vintage Story server backup is a copy of the Saves folder, made while the server is stopped. Make one before every game update, mod change and settings change, in the Backups folder. The agent can do the copy with copy_file or run your own script with Shell. Restore the copy once in a spare folder to prove that the copy opens.

Models, privacy and download

Do my files leave the PC?

The answer depends on the model you pick. With a cloud model, the prompt text goes to that provider, including the text of files the agent reads. With a local model nothing leaves your PC. Your chats, working folders and API keys stay on the PC, secrets in tool output are redacted before they reach the model, and Cascadia Merge sends no telemetry.

How can I check the installer before running it?

The installer is not code-signed yet, so compare its SHA-256 checksum with the published manifest before you run it. On Windows, the certutil command prints the checksum of the file you downloaded. SmartScreen may show a warning. Choose More info and then Run anyway only after the two checksums match, and if they do not match, do not run the file at all.

Do I need an account to run Cascadia Merge?

No. You can run the app without creating an account. A cloud AI provider may charge you separately for its own usage if you connect one, and a local model or the built-in model needs no such account. The download button records the time, your IP address, your browser user agent and the referral source, which is explained on the privacy page.

Which languages does it support?

The interface of the app is available in 13 languages, and every page of this website is available in 20 languages. Use the language selector of this website to read a page in your own language. The two numbers differ because the app and the website are separate things.
